Talking Horses: the Grand National outsider seeking an emotional win

I Just Know has halved in price to 50-1 since the Aintree weights were revealed and trainer Sue Smith says he’s the right typeI see that Pricewise’s Grand National tip in today’s Racing Post is Total Recall at 14-1, a day after I put up the same horse at 16s. So I can feel pretty smug about that until he either gets a stone bruise or unseats at the first. Talking Horses: a new peace between British and Irish handicappers

There’s going to be less to argue about in future, alas. Plus, a new rule that makes things tricky for Grand National hopesI suspect we’ll hear renewed criticism of Phil Smith’s handicapping from Michael O’Leary at some point soon, possibly even today, in response to the publication of the Grand National weights yesterday. But it could be that peace is finally breaking out between the British and Irish jump-racing handicappers, leading to a glorious future with much less bickering over a few pounds here or there and consequently, er, much less to write about. Talking Horses: stunned by news of Frankie Dettori's pay cut

Al Shaqab are to pay the famed jockey half as much this year, on the grounds that they expect to have fewer runners in BritainIt’s a terrible thing when middle-aged workers, having given their best years to a company, are tossed on the scrapheap because they’ve risen up the pay scale and become too expensive. Such are my thoughts as I contemplate this news that Frankie Dettori has had his annual retainer cut in half by Al Shaqab. Talking Horses: Has Evan Williams found another Grand National type?

The Welsh trainer has an excellent record of making the frame in the Aintree race and Cesar Collonges could be going there one dayEvan Williams, the Vale of Glamorgan trainer, achieved the astonishing feat of saddling horses to finish placed in five consecutive Grand Nationals between 2009 and 2013. The names of the two horses involved in that remarkable achievement are State Of Play and Cappa Bleu. Most people only dream of winning the Aintree spectacular, but Williams may just be getting that glint of hope in his eye of actually winning the big one with Cesar Collonges (1.00), who runs at Carlisle and is on offer at 11-4. Derek Fox in dreamland after One For Arthur wins Grand National

Desperate throw of the dice comes off for triumphant Aintree jockey, one month after he sustained broken wrist and collarboneAlongside the efforts by all of those connected with One For Arthur, a portion of this Grand National victory belongs to Jack Berry House, a £3m rehabilitation facility set up by the Injured Jockeys Fund that will shortly mark the second anniversary of its opening. If that money had never been found, Derek Fox would not have recovered in time to deliver one of the coolest winning rides in the long history of this famous race, having broken a wrist and a collarbone a month ago.Sending Fox to live there at Malton in North Yorkshire was rather a desperate throw of...
