‘Revolutionary’ European Tour proposals risk turning golf into a gimmick | Ewan Murray

Last week the European Tour announced details of the World Super 6 Perth which includes 54 holes of stroke play, six-hole match play games and a 90m knockout hole. Will hitting shots on the run or through rings of fire be next?At times like these, the PGA Tour properly flexes its financial muscle. This week’s Tour Championship at East Lake concludes a four-event series which delivers $34m in prize monies. That’s before the epic bonus pool for the FedEx Cup, starting with a $10m first prize, is even taken into account. These riches are deemed grotesque by some, even if they still lag behind the peak of American team sports. It also raises a smile that the PGA Tour’s strength is...

Dated and uninspiring: no wonder USA failed at the World Cup of Hockey

The Americans came into the tournament bereft of skill and speed. Little wonder they could not complete with the world’s bestPhil Kessel reminded the hockey world how much they’ve been missing him as of late. The Pittsburgh Penguins sniper was left off Team USA’s roster at the World Cup of Hockey, a questionable decision at best considering he led the team in scoring at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Kessel absolutely roasted the American team, perhaps more specifically the brain trust, towards the end of the 4-2 loss to Team Canada in a near-perfect tweet.Just sitting around the house tonight w my dog. Felt like I should be doing something important, but couldn't put my finger on it. Continue reading...

Trump and Brexit add yet more spice to Ryder Cup’s theatres of cultural war | Marina Hyde

It is remarkable that in an event where the sport is so electrifying, golf is merely a plot device and Hazeltine promises more multi-faceted conflict than everEven in more placid recent times, the Ryder Cup has always been the fiercest culture war in all sport. America versus Europe. The individuals versus the team. Lone wolves versus the pack. Unabombers versus cells. Sex addiction versus sex. It is quite remarkable, in an event where the sport itself is frequently so electrifying, that it should rarely attain much more than the level of a plot device in the wider story. Jordan Morris could have the biggest impact of any recent MLS rookie

Plus: New England are still the ultimate September team; there’s hope for everyone in MLS; the Red Bulls’ inability to hold on to a leadThe question was never over Jordan Morris’s ability, but of whether he could handle the expectation that came with his move to the Seattle Sounders. He is the brightest young talent in the American game right now, alongside Christian Pulisic – something that was obvious from the moment he made his full international debut as a teenager still playing college soccer. On Saturday Morris provided yet another answer to all that has been posed of him this year. His diving header nine minutes from time gave Seattle a crucial 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps, keeping...

The Patriots' offense is fine without Tom Brady – it's defense that's the worry

Jimmy Garopollo’s injury may end up being merely a temporary setback for the New England Patriots, but they are far from perfectFor most of the first half, it looked like the New England Patriots had discovered their Next Tom Brady. OK, that may be a stretch, but it at least looked like they had found a player they could sell as a potential Next Tom Brady to one of the many quarterback-starved teams once the Actual Tom Brady returned from his four week league-mandated vacation. In his second game as a starter, Jimmy Garoppolo went 18-for-27, passing for 234 yards as the Patriots built up a 21-0 lead over the Miami Dolphins. Garoppolo, coming off New England’s huge Week 1...
