Stradivarius moved to within a point of Order Of St George at the head of the betting for next month’s Gold Cup at Ascot following his three-length success in the Group Two Yorkshire Cup here on Friday, but as John Gosden, his trainer, admitted afterwards, no one can be sure that the four-year-old will stay two-and-a-half miles until the field straightens up for home on 21 June.

Stradivarius was running for the first time since mid-October, but travelled so smoothly until halfway down the straight that Frankie Dettori – took a couple of long looks around at his rivals to check that he was indeed going as easily as it seemed.
