Talking Horses: Just Wonderful races to impressive Rockfel success

The Aidan O’Brien runner was cut in the betting for next year’s 2,000 Guineas after a smooth victory

There is Group One racing a few miles from Ryan Moore’s Newmarket home on Saturday, but he will be somewhere over the Atlantic as Ten Sovereigns, an odds-on favourite, goes to post for the Middle Park Stakes. The ride on Mendelssohn, the 18-length UAE Derby winner, in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park is at the other end of Moore’s long commute, and as he settles into his first-class seat, Aidan O’Brien’s stable jockey will know that the yard is rediscovering its best form at just the right time.

On the Saturday morning of the Cambridgeshire meeting last year, O’Brien had 18 Group One wins on the board already and a double in the Middle Park and Cheveley Park Stakes moved him within sight of Bobby Frankel’s all-time record of 25.

There’s not much trick to finding a horse at big odds for the Silver Cambridgeshire, unless you can’t see past Little Jo, who’s trying to complete a four-timer. Looking back, Chris Grant achieved some trick in getting that one into handicaps on a mark of 52, before the beast moved on to Brian Ellison. He runs here off 75 and can probably go well again, though it will be a lot tougher than the races he’s been winning.
