Switzerland beat Serbia, 3–2, on Friday in the final Group G match of the 2022 World Cup.
The victory for Switzerland clinched the Swiss’s spot in the knockout stage, while Serbia will be going home after finishing at the bottom of the group following Cameroon’s 1–0 win over Brazil on Friday.
With Switzerland leading 3–2 in the 67th minute, the Serbian bench took exception to the officials not calling a penalty for the challenge on Aleksandar Mitrović.
Several Serbian players came off the sideline to address the head referee. Multiple players from Switzerland were seen trying to get the Serbian players back to the bench, but it was clearly contentious in the second half between the Serbians and the officials, as well as Serbia and Switzerland.
It was a frustrating loss for Serbia and another frustrating showing for the country in this World Cup. For the second consecutive tournament since failing to qualify in 2014, the Serbians once again failed to advance to the knockout stage.
