The Tucson Roadrunners, American Hockey League affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes, announced that the team has partnered with 360fly to provide fans with 360-degree views.
360fly is the maker of the single-lens camera that captures 360-degree 4K video, and the Roadrunners in their inaugural season are the first hockey team team to partner with the company. They used this technology at the Red/White scrimmage Sunday.
A time-lapse video of the arena was shot from center ice, and a referee wore a 360fly cam on his helmet during the actin, giving very unique perspectives that can be seen at all angles.
The time-lapse video allows the viewer to see the entire arena fill up prior to the game and all the activity that occurs in minutes before the match begins. The helmet cam lets viewers feel like they are on the ice with the athletes, as the ref skates through the action, the viewer goes right along with him, seeing up close what it’s like to be in the middle of the game.
Unlike other helmet cams the NHL has tested, like the stationary GoPro, 360fly lets viewers drag the video to the area they want to see.
This allows for a more well rounded experience for the fan. Instead of just seeing what is right in front of the person or object with the camera, you can see what is on each side and behind it.
The Roadrunners will use these 360fly cams in many different ways throughout the upcoming season to give their fans this new look at the arena and the games.
In addition to the time-lapse cam, the Roadrunners are planning on putting cameras on zambonis, team benches and in different locations around the stadium.
The team is also working with the league in exploring the possibility of allowing refs to wear the helmet cam during live regular season games.
The home opener for the Roadrunners is Friday against the Stockton Heat.
