Atlético Madrid, a Spanish soccer club which competes in La Liga, is lighting up the pitch in its move to a new stadium — literally.
Through a four-year partnership with electronic company Philips, which works with over half of football stadiums worldwide, the new stadium scheduled to open next year will be the first to be entirely lit with LED technology. Philips’ ArenaExperience technology will assist in transitioning the pitch into a colored spectrum.
“A very important step which will place our stadium at the forefront of technology and that, as we have seen in the video, will allow us to shine more brightly,” Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo said in Spanish at the announcement.

“The lighting specifically designed for this space will bring light one step further, allowing the stadium to be alive and make the attendees vibrate, from the access to the stadium to the VIP areas of Neptuno-Atlético de Madrid Premium, changing the way of watching a match both on the pitch and on television,” Josep Martinez, President and CEO of Philips Lighting in Portugal and Spain, said in a statement.
The new 67,000-seat capacity arena will turn red and white before Atlético Madrid’s home matches while various colors will fill the stadium and crowd when a goal is scored and during other presentations. Philips VayaFlood solution will provide 16 million colors throughout the new stadium. The VayaFlood technology combined with the Philips ColorKinetics will create unique visual shows, too.
