Australian Rules Football Reaches Fans Worldwide With New App

One of America’s favorite sports and pastimes is football.

Not many know that football is almost just as popular in Australia, with Australian rules of course.

Now, thanks to the Watch AFL app for mobile and tablet devices, Americans and others outside of Australia can watch live Australian Football League matches with the ability to pause and rewind the stream. For those who watch the matches on demand, there is a spoiler-free option on the app to turn scores off. The live and on-demand content are only available outside of Australia.

The new live-streaming option will be available for the NAB AFL Women’s competition, the JLT Community Series preseason matches and for the entire AFL Premiership Season. The Fox Footy channel can also be streamed. The service will be free on the app or watchafl.com.au until March 23 when the men’s season kicks off, and then fans can access the weekly, monthly or season passes. Using the app, the matches can also be seen on TV using AirPlay.

“The AFL and our partner Fox Sports are thrilled that all games and Fox Footy shows will be available to our fans who live or are travelling overseas,” AFL CEO Gillion McLachlan said in a statement.

“All our games live and on-demand, including the Toyota AFL Premiership Season and finals series…plus all the favourites that fans get to watch in Australia like AFL360, On The Couch and other great Fox Sports programming, will now be available for the first time in the new offering.”

The app is geared towards reaching AFL fans around the world in addition to making more aware about what the league is and what Australian football entails.

“We also recognise the growing number of AFL fans around the world,” Fox Sports CEO Patrick Delany said in a statement. “The innovative new Watch AFL service will deliver AFL to more markets, across more platforms reaching more fans than ever before.”
