Boom.tv Raises $3.5 Million As World’s First 3D Live Streaming Platform For eSports

Boom.tv — the worlds first 3D live streaming platform for eSports — announced Tuesday it had raised $3.5 million in seed funding. The round included participation from First Round Capital, Tandem Capital, Crosscut Ventures, Betaworks, BITKRAFT eSports Ventures, Boost VC and other angel investors.

As players stream their game through the Boom.tv app, which is available in beta starting this week, the platform will construct a 3D experience for fans to experience the gameplay from a variety of perspectives across mobile or PC. Additionally, the app will give streamers the ability to enable instant replays and create highlight clips that they then can quickly share via social media. Soon, Boom.tv will be releasing an update to its app so gamers can also broadcast live in virtual reality.

“Improved broadcast technology was the tentpole around which professional sports mushroomed,” Boom.tv CEO Sumit Gupta said in a statement. “Our mission is to put 3D technology in the hands of millions of gamers and revolutionize the way eSports content is produced and consumed.”

According to the Redwood City, Calif.-based startup, the funding will be used to expand into larger gaming communities and support the top eSports titles, which already includes League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

“While we’ve seen piecemeal solutions in this space previously, the technology behind Boom.tv is transformational, and their team of 30 engineers have both the passion and know-how to build an end-to-end solution that will completely enhance the eSports spectator experience, particularly in VR,” Chris Fralic, Partner at First Round Capital, said in a statement.
