Fans at game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers witnessed “larger than life” 3D images of the home team on center court. The Cleveland Cavaliers partnered with Quince Imaging, Inc., to provide enhanced live-game watching experiences via 3D projection technology.
Fans sat in the pitch-black Quicken Loans Arena and watched a shadow of the world’s largest basketball bounce across the court. There were team banners waving furiously in the wind. Super-sized fan favorites were dunking balls, shooting J’s, and making three’s. Images of the starting five loomed over the basketball court which changed shape, dropped in and out, and even exploded.
The scientific explanation of 3D projection is the process of mapping three-dimensional points to a two-dimensional plane. Add graphic digital display to that and viewers get ”in your face” excitement. Quince Imaging was able to project recorded animations onto the court using quite a few pairs of 26,000-lumen projectors, which all had to be mounted at a certain angle to beam the image flat onto the court.
Quince Imaging is a company made up of engineers and display designers. It has been providing 3D projection and display since 1984, and offers 3D projection solutions from inception to completion.
Quince Imaging’s mission is to make memorable use of innovative technology to enhance the accuracy and excitement of the intended messages by bringing new technologies to the live-event industry – something they have done for several arenas and events. Ultimately, Quince Imaging provides full service, experiential events that create valuable fan-hype before the game. The Cleveland Cavaliers banged up roster undoubtedly fed off of the fan’s energy last night in route to a second straight win against Golden State.
