Daktronics Enhances Rice University Stadium Experience With New Display Systems

Reckling Park, home of the Rice Owls baseball team, will now feature one of the largest video boards in college baseball. The new 1,000-square-foot LED video display is just the latest athletic facility improvement for the Owls due to their relationship with Daktronics.

Back in June, Daktronics announced a partnership with Rice and IMG College. Their first project provided the football program with a new main video display and digital audio facades at Rice Stadium. These digital audio facades use linear freeform LED elements to provide an acoustically transparent video display in front of the speaker system. Rice now joins Air Force, which announced its partnership with Daktronics last February, as only the second school in the country to utilize this kind of technology in their athletic facilities.

“We did a lot of testing to figure out how could we put LEDs in front of speaker mesh that typically is just an acoustically transparent material,” Daktronics sales representative Dan Fjeldheim told Sound & Video Contractor. “So, we found how we could space out LEDs to where there would still be a visible and readable image yet it wouldn’t affect the sound quality coming out of the speakers behind it. So through some testing and experimentation we found a good happy medium there that didn’t affect the audio coming out of those sound cabinets.”

Along with this technology, the Daktronics Creative Services team also supplies their content and graphics package to Rice to enhance the quality of the display.
