Floyd Mayweather Unveils Virtual Reality Fitness Experience

In August, Floyd Mayweather announced he would be opening a gym franchise where people could get fit using a number of innovative technologies, even training with the undefeated pro boxer in virtual reality and through a companion app.

The virtual reality experience is now, well, reality, and “Money” is in your corner.

Mayweather Boxing + Fitness announced Tuesday at CES that the VR component is ready, just weeks ahead of the opening of the flagship gym location in Los Angeles. While the virtual reality boxing is designed to be usable at home with a headset and hand controller, those looking to get into the ring with Mayweather will have to head to one of the gym locations, according to the announcement.

The virtual reality boxing experience will allow users to select a 12-week program based on their preferences: training, padwork, or head-to-head virtual competition. In all three modes, Mayweather will act as the trainer, teaching users the trademark moves that have made him so successful. Users can also train in a number of different virtual environments, and the hand control helps track calories, speed, and intensity.

“It has virtual Floyd teaching you first how to throw a punch in the right way, taking you through different punch combinations, teaching you how to duck, bob, and weave, and essentially coaching you throughout that workout, all the while getting a cardio, high intensity workout,” James Williams, the CEO of Mayweather Boxing + Fitness,” told Fox News at CES.

According to the announcement, the gym locations will offer boxing and functional fitness classes, with the VR program meant as supplemental training. And according to Fox News, Mayweather plans to add 50 other well-known boxers to guide users and fight against them.

Mayweather Boxing + Fitness is also offering a subscription-based virtual fitness league that allows users to compete against friends across the world and to track their progress and fitness, as well as create groups for motivation.

“Boxing gave me a platform to become a world-class athlete, and I’m using those skills to build a global fitness platform that will help people to train better and smarter,” Mayweather said in the CES announcement. “I’ve seen how the fitness industry has evolved; and now we’re taking it to the next level, not only by incorporating the workouts that I used throughout my career, but also by investing in cutting-edge technology and making that a core part of our offering.”
