Fox Sports Premium Launching in Mexico and Central America in 2019

Fox Sports Latin America announced the launch of Fox Sports Premium, a new OTT streaming offering that will debut in Mexico and Central America in January 2019. The new channel will operate from Fox Sports’ broadcast studio in Mexico City.

Fox Sports Premium will stream 24 hours a day and feature exclusive games from top international soccer leagues such as Liga MX (Mexico), the Bundesliga (Germany), and Superliga Argentina. Other coverage will include matches between Mexican and Central American clubs in the CONCACAF Champions League, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Europa League.

Outside of soccer, the service will also stream content from a broad range of sports such as Formula 1, UFC, WWE, and select fights from the International Boxing Organization (IBO). According to an official press release, Fox Sports Premium will be available in Full HD and integrate statistics, key information, summaries of best plays, original debate shows, news coverage; as well as pregame, in-game, and postgame analysis.

“The launch of FOX Sports Premium in Mexico and Central America is part of our strategy to expand a-la-carte premium sports content in the region,” said Carlos Martínez, President of FOX Networks Group Latin America, in the press release. “These markets join those of Argentina and Chile, where our Premium product is already very successful.”

The new Latin American premium offering will be consumed separately from Fox Sports Go, the existing Fox Sports streaming option. Fox Sports Premium will come at a monthly price of 139 pesos ($8) per month.

The price of Fox Sports Premium is listed as nearly double the monthly charge of the ESPN+ streaming service that was released this past year for a $4.99 monthly fee. However, Fox Sports Premium will offer its Latin American subscribers exclusive coverage to some of the most coveted events from the region’s most popular sport (soccer). ESPN+, in contrast, currently does not have the rights to stream games from the most popular leagues in its region: the NFL and the NBA.

Disney announced yesterday that ESPN+ surpassed 1 million paid subscribers within the platform’s first five months. One similarity between ESPN+ and Fox Sports Premium is that both services appear focused on developing new original programming content to compliment the actual games being streamed.
