Garmin Delivers New Apps, Product Offerings For Cycling Enthusiasts

Cycling enthusiasts will be getting a lift from Garmin as the the GPS technology company announced new products in conjunction with CES in Las Vegas this week.

Garmins Connect IQ Store will now house the apps, data fields and new watch faces from other companies such as Trek, GU Energy Labs and others. Connect IQ, which is an open platform, gives outside developers the ability to create different content for Garmin products, wearables, bikes and outdoor handles.

For example, a new Connect IQ data field from Trek/Bontrager for Garmin Edge GPS bike computers will give cyclists easier access and control of their headlights and taillights without being disrupted during their ride. Cyclists will be able to see battery levels for the lights and control the setting for daylight, nighttime and more.

Additionally, a GU Energy Labs data field will keep cyclists properly fueled, reminding them when to ingest GU Energy Gels to optimize performance. Other newly-released Connect IQ apps include a widget from JOIN that allows users to more easily participate in group rides.

“Connect IQ is a pillar of the Garmin wearables strategy which is centered on purpose-built devices for consumers who want to measure and enhance their active lifestyle pursuits, whether it’s running, cycling, swimming, golfing, boating, walking or simply being more active,” Dan Bartel, Garmin Vice President of Worldwide Sales, said in a statement. “Just as each Garmin user is unique, so are all of the apps available through Connect IQ. We’re excited to launch these new apps as we continue to integrate data from brands and developers and grow the Connect IQ store to make customizing your Garmin device both useful and fun.”
