With Super Bowl LI in Houston less than three days away, we wanted to examine the Twitter followers of both the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons.
How do the Falcons and Patriots’ Twitter followers stack up against each other, which categories do they fall into, what other accounts do they follow and how do they compare to the rest of Twitter?
SportTechie worked with Affinio, a data science platform that reveals how audiences segment into naturally forming interest-based communities, to analyze the types of fans which follow both accounts.

Below is a breakdown of the 14 cluster segments of Falcons fans who follow the team on Twitter.
You can also see the Patriots’ 14 clusters below, which interestingly enough includes some WWE fans who love gaming as opposed to the Falcons, who have a group of NBA fans that love gaming following its account.
Followers of the Falcons on Twitter, who are also nine times more likely to use the word ‘Georgia’ in their biography than the rest of Twitter, are also heavy followers of University of Georgia Athletics, the Atlanta Hawks, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Atlanta Braves, WSB-TV and FOX 5 Atlanta. On the flip side, the Patriots’ followers on Twitter, which are 56 percent male, also include a strong following of the Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox, wide receiver Julian Edelman, Boston Celtics, recently retired baseball star David Ortiz and Barstool Sports.
Additionally, when Patriots fans tweet, some of the top hashtags they use are #Patriots, #PatriotsNation, #NFLPlayoffs, #SuperBowl and #OneMore while Falcons fans are big proponents of #RiseUp, #InBrotherhood, #Falcons, #MattVP and #MattyIce, according to Affinio.
