For the first time, a live stream of the Super Bowl will feature local advertisement integration. More than 170 FOX affiliates around the country have committed to partnering with FOX Sports to program local digital ads, according to the network.
“As part of the buildup to this year’s Super Bowl, we’re committed to creating the best possible experience for fans by dramatically expanding the ways and places in which they can watch the game,” FOX Sports President, COO and Executive Producer Eric Shanks said in a statement. “Our pioneering collaboration with our affiliates to allow streaming local ad insertions will make commercials even more relevant for viewers and help make this year’s game even more of a personal experience for every fan.”
Last year, streaming coverage of Super Bowl 50 on CBS and NFL digital properties set viewership records with the game streamed across additional platforms. The live stream drew 3.96 million unique viewers across laptops, desktops, tablets, connected TV devices and mobile phones (for Verizon customers). For the CBS stream, national ads ran in the same spots as the television broadcast.
The last time FOX Sports streamed the big game for Super Bowl XLVIII three years ago, it also offered the stream on FOX Sports GO for free.
