Nike updated the operating system for their Nike+ running app on Monday, which is probably not a coincidence since the Apple Watch was announced on Monday as well. The Apple Watch is the next big wearable, at least in terms of the coverage it has gained, and Nike+ which is one of Nike’s most popular apps and one of the most used running apps on the market will be fully integrated with the new Apple Watch platform.
With Nike’s update to their running app there will be easier in-run music controls, an optimized landscape and armband mode, and improved access to maps included in the new update. Nike’s biggest push, which also happens to be one of its strength is that they will be launching partnerships with industry-leading companies like Garmin, TomTom, Wahoo Fitness, one of the pioneers with heart rate monitors, and Netpulse, the largest provider of branded mobile apps for health clubs and connected cardio technology for equipment manufacturers.

The variety in the partnerships Nike has had will translate to users being able to use different devices to connect to Nike+ and enjoy all of its benefits in distinct ways to leverage the latest technology in the fitness world. The app will also see a new partners screen, which will help a user manage preferences and establish seamless connection between the apps and devices.
Nike’s update to their running app comes on the heels of the announcement of the new Under Armour UA Record app, which allows third parties to connect. Nike may not have been the first to have their app open to third parties, but they were not far behind. As pioneers in their industry and the release of the Apple Watch coming up, we will see what the new change does for them and for Apple Watch users.
