When the Seattle Seahawks faced the New Orleans Saints on Monday night football earlier this month, fans in the stadium had more than just a victory in mind.
Fans at CenturyLink Field set a new noise record for the loudest outdoor sports stadium, measuring at 137.6 decibels.
The previous record had been 137.5 decibels, recorded by Kansas City Chiefs fans in October.
How are fans continuously breaking the outdoor stadium noise record? They’re doing so by not only cheering at the top of their lungs, but by using noise-making apps on their smart phones.
Apps including the Crowd Noise App and the Noisemaker! app are available for Apple devices in the app store and can double the noise that an individual can make on their own.
The Crowd Noise app was developed in 2010 and plays stimulated crowd noise at the press of a button. The app has the ability to double the noise that a person can make which could help increase crowd noise overall if multiple people have the app. An interesting concept that Crowd Noise has that other noise making apps do the ability to customize.
A fan can set up a custom profile on the app and add up to three custom colors from the color picker. Fans can personalize even more by uploading their favorite teams logo to their custom profile. When the app makes noise, the colors of a fan’s favorite team will flash. The Crowd Noise app will help fans increase the crowd noise as well as add a personal touch by allowing them to customize it to their favorite sports teams. The app is 99-cents and available in the app store for iPhones.
The Noisemaker! app was developed by CTS MobileSoft in 2010 and is accelerometer based. Fans can use the app by pressing the screen or shaking their phone. The app has basic graphics and a simple interface, which gives fans of any age the ability to use it.
With the use of apps such as Noisemaker! and Crowd Noise, fans can double the sound they’re able to produce while at sporting events. The extra fan noise has potential to help the home team play with more energy and disrupt the communication of opposing offenses. When home teams play with more energy they have a better chance of winning. When teams win more their revenue increases because fan attendance increases. When fan attendance increases the louder the stadium can be and the more energy players will play with. I could go on and on in this circle but you get the point! The louder the better.
The game in which Seahawks fans broke the crowd noise record ended up being a 34-7 victory for Seattle and Drew Brees and his offense were visibly disrupted by the roar of the crowd throughout the game.
The Seattle Seahawks are undefeated at home so far this season. If their fans continue to use these noisemaking apps to help their team and put pressure on opposing teams, they would continue to be strong favorites at CenturyLink field and be an example of how other fan bases could help their teams just by using noise-making apps.
