Artificial intelligence company Remo Technology debuted an autonomous director camera at CES on Sunday that can automatically track subjects, such as skateboarders, basketball players, and other athletes.
The OBSBOT Tail is just 7.3 inches by 3.3 inches with a three-axis gimbal that allows it to pivot and follow an on-screen athlete through 360 degrees. The Tail includes an optical zoom lens that shoots 4K video and 12 megapixel photos. The software’s AI algorithms allow for a wide range of compositions, including framing the scene to just the upper body, for instance. The device can also recognize certain gestures, which can be used to initiate recording.
“The OBSBOT Tail is a groundbreaking camera that makes sophisticated filming techniques and filming complex movements readily accessible to anyone, with just a tap of a button,” said Bo Liu, CEO and founder of Shenzhen-based Remo Technology, in a news release. “We’ve worked with dozens of dance groups, street sports teams and vloggers to design a camera that can truly capture movement. We hope that with OBSBOT Tail, people can enjoy the freedom of expressing their creativity through videos, without the hassle of getting help from others, or having to endure the complex process of setting up or adjusting a camera.”

If the Tail succeeds, then highlights, recruiting videos, and just-for-fun Instagram clips will no longer require a friend with a basic sense of cinematography. And friends dunking for the first time or landing their first 360 kickflip won’t need to beg their buddies to believe that they really completed the milestone when no one was there.
