We’ve all heard it before from kids. That same tired, old, sentence about not going to school to learn. Maybe the topics in school are boring for them and it really is unfortunate but in an effort to make learning fun for kids, two companies have come together to combine learning and sports.

The Science of Sport, an Arizona based non-profit, and Blast Motion, a California motion capturing sports company, have built a curriculum that will combine science, mathematics, and sports to enhance learning. Participants are motivated to learn math, statistics, and physics through sports while attending interactive camps.

“As educators we are always looking for tools that help make science and mathematics more fun for kids,” said Ricardo Velerdi, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Systems and Industrial Engineering at the University of Arizona and founder of the Science of Sport.

Blast Motion is providing sensors and technology that will allow the athletes to see the mechanics of the activities in which they are participating. One example is integrating motion sensing technology and video capturing capabilities to Science of Baseball camps for 5th-8th grade.  This is useful because looking at the footage and data can help players make adjustments to become a better player, all while learning the physics behind the swing.

This partnership is a big win for the kids involved. In a society that values education above anything else, it is important to know that children always have the opportunity to learn in a way that engages them. Combining sports and learning truly is a magnificent way to get kids passionate about their education.
