SK Telecom Shows What A 5G Baseball Stadium Looks Like With Augmented Reality, VR

When baseball fans at Incheon SK Happy Dream Park hold up their smartphones on opening day Friday, they will be able to use augmented reality to see real-time data on batter vs. pitcher matchups overlaid onto what’s happening on the field. It’s batting average and OPS and Pokemon GO, too in the Korean Baseball Organization.

That’s the experience that wireless telecommunications operator SK Telecom wants to showcase to fans during the SK Wyverns’ season-opening three-game series, the company will be providing a vision of what a future with 5G connectivity looks like at the baseball stadium.

Fans can use SK Telecom’s augmented reality platform T real within the SK Wyverns’ PLAY With app to access stats, and there’s plenty more as well.

As part of the 5G trial event at the stadium, fans can also watch the action in live 360-degree virtual reality from up to eight different camera angles, including from behind the umpire and catcher and also from the dugout’s perspective. It’s a virtual VIP seat upgrade while wearing the Samsung Gear VR headset.

Reportedly, the 5G Connected Car — T5 — will also show off its streaming capabilities during the ceremonial first pitch on opening day.

“Building the 5G stadium will stimulate demand and the popularization of the 5G network,” Park Jin-hyo, the head of SKT’s Network Research & Development Center, told The Korea Bizwire. “We will make the success of 5G Stadium known internationally, and help South Korea lead the global standard of 5G technology.”
