Ever gotten tired mid-way through a run when the perfect song with just the right tempo starts playing and along comes that second wind?  Well Spotify believes runners should have the perfect song tempo for their entire run, and has developed new features that will have them motivated from start to finish.

Earlier this week, Spotify Chief Product Officer, Gustav Söderström, introduced the new run features for the Spotify app that uses the movement sensors already on smartphones.  The idea for the new features was inspired by stories from experienced runners who describe the burst of energy they get when the right song comes on, but then dissipates once it goes off.  The run feature is designed to keep users running with its ability to change the music tempo to match the runner’s pace.  All runners have to do is turn on the Spotify app, press the running man button, and start running.

To ensure that runners have the right tempo for the right pace, Spotify has partnered with various musicians to create songs based on varying running speeds.

To achieve this, Spotify consulted with fitness experts and runners to assist with product development, as well as used the entire Spotify Product and Design team to go on those runs.  And the hard work paid off.  So far, Spotify has six “experiences” for app users to run with.  According to Daniel Ek, cofounder of Spotify, the music will “…magically rearrange to fit your current pace.”

“We’ve combined the best music on the planet – recommendations based on your listening history, multiple-genre playlists and original running compositions written by some of the world’s foremost DJs and composers – all tuned to your tempo and seamlessly transitioned to ensure you’ll never miss a beat. Start running and Spotify will detect your tempo, matching the perfect music in time to your step – making you a harder, better, faster, stronger runner.”

As part of this release, new integrations from Runkeeper running app, Nike and Tiesto will be forthcoming later this year as Spotify announced its new partnerships with all three.
