Who said you couldn’t have a little fun while purchasing your favorite team’s gear?
The San Francisco 49ers recently partnered with San Francisco-based technology firm Dropit to inject some fun when fans purchase team products, according to Stuff.
Through integrating Dropit’s software into the team’s app, fans will be able to participate in minute-long live reverse auctions, where the auction price drops each second. Consequently, the longer an auction lasts, the cheaper a product naturally becomes.

Dropit will additionally showcase its technology at Levi’s Stadium on both jumbotrons and fans’ mobile devices in order to sell San Francisco merchandise and further engage with fans.
“It’s kind of like augmented reality. We’ve gamified the ads on the big boards essentially,” Dropit CEO Peter Howell, told Stuff about the new partnership with the 49ers.
Dropit also had its technology on display earlier this month at Solider Field in Chicago when the All Blacks — New Zealand’s national rugby team — faced off against Ireland. Adam Bennett, the New Zealand Trade Commissioner for the U.S., recently said that Dropit is currently having discussions with MLB, NHL and NFL other teams as it grows its presence in the country.
“The nature of the sports franchise model means there is a lot of ‘me too’ sentiment, so if one gets it, all the others want it too,” he said.
As of now, Dropit charges a $50,000 licensing fee per month for its services and to date, it has conducted nearly 400 auctions.
