As anticipation builds for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, the Japanese are also looking at their past when the Olympics were last held in the capital city in 1964. They’ll look at the city back then using virtual reality — with the help of old photographs.
1964 Tokyo VR is seeking photos of the city 10 years before 1964 and 10 years after from individuals and corporations for the purpose of using photogrammetry and 3D technology to reproduce the past cityscape and Shibuya neighborhood into virtual reality.
Photos that are scanned and posted on the website along with the location of the shot, age and memories will help recreate the streets back then during the time of the last Olympics.
