With Super Bowl Sunday comes Super Bowl parties. With Super Bowl parties come alcoholic beverages. That can result in drunk driving, but not if Tostitos can help it.
Just in time for Super Bowl parties, Tostitos created the limited-edition “Party Safe” bag, a bag of Tostitos chips featuring an alcohol-detecting sensor that acts as a reminder for people not to drink and drive. When alcohol is detected, LEDs on the bag turn red in the shape of a steering wheel and reveal a code for an Uber ride with a “Don’t drink and drive” message. The bag’s sensor turns green if alcohol is not detected.
The sensor is connected to a microcontroller, calibrated to detect small traces of alcohol on a person’s breath to let you know if you’ve had too much to drink, according to Fast Company.
If you find yourself in a state unable to dial a phone number, near-field-communicaton (NFC) technology lets you call for free rides by tapping the bag with your phone.

The “Party Safe” bags were first released earlier in this January when Tostitos surprised fans with them during NFL playoff games. Here’s how one police department reacted to the bags.

But for people unable to get one of the alcohol-detecting bags, Tostitos has also partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Uber to raise awareness around the issue of drunk driving and offer anyone $10 off a ride on Super Bowl Sunday by entering a Tostitos UPC code in the Uber app.
“Our goal is to remove 25,000 cars from the roads that Sunday evening,” Frito-Lay chief marketing officer Jennifer Saenz said in a statement. “Whether watching the big game at a friend’s house or at a local bar, a safe ride home is just a few, east taps away. By simply entering a participating Tostitos UPC code in the Uber app, fans nationwide can receive $10 off an Uber ride.”
Tennessee Titans tight end Delanie Walker, whose aunt and uncle were killed by a drunk driver after watching him play in the 2013 Super Bowl, added in a statement, “Having a good time and being safe go hand in hand. Drunk driving is 100 percent preventable. Thanks to Tostitos and Uber, it’s easier than ever to make safe choice if your plans include alcohol.”
