Twitter Nets Deal With Sky Sports To Stream Premier League Goals & Highlights

Twitter is on a hot streak.

The social media platform has announced yet another deal this time with Sky Sports in order to stream live Premier League goals and highlights for the 2016-17 season.

Although there was no release of a dollar amount tagged to the deal, when the 2016-17 season kicks off on August 13 between Hull City and the defending champion, Leicester City, Twitter’s coverage through Sky Sports will be active.

If you’ve been casually following the sports tech news, you have probably gotten lost by now with Twitter’s commanding number of streaming deals with major sporting leagues.

From the NFL, to the MLB and even Wimbledon, Twitter has been crushing deals in Mark Cuban-esque fashion like they were on Shark Tank. Competing with the 1.6 billion monthly users that rival Facebook brings to the table, Twitter has branched out, actively pursuing live stream opportunities.

Per their recent agreement with Sky Sports, Twitter users in the UK and Ireland will be able to enjoy clips of their favorite Premier League team’s games broadcast by Sky in real time via the SkyFootball Twitter account. Although 3pm Saturday games are not usually shown on television for Ireland located subscribers, this is about to change. Sky Sports Football Centre application will also give customers access to the full highlights from all football league games.

David Gibbs, digital director of Sky Sports is beaming considering the traffic Twitter will bring to the company.

“We’re delighted to be working with Twitter to bring in-game clips to football fans across the UK and Ireland as part of our biggest ever season of football,” said Gibbs. “With more than 30 million users across a variety of platforms, Sky Sports is already the number one digital destination for sports in the UK.”

Sky Sports is already the number one digital destination for sports in the UK, but with this deal set in place, the platform is hoping to experience even more popularity across the world.

Twitter’s Theo Lewis knows the deal is equally as profitable for Twitter.

“We can’t think of a better way to continue the momentous summer of sport on Twitter than live Premier League video clips. Sky Sports are incredibly innovative on Twitter so it seemed like a natural fit to work with them to bring fans the most sought-after action in sport, in an instant,” said Lewis.

Twitter does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon on netting deals with multiple leagues and events. The digital trend of live stream demand is at an all-time high and the social media site is shooting a curving shot into the back of the net towards the technological future.
