WNBA games will be live streamed on Twitter for the first time starting in two weeks as the first professional women’s sports events on the platform.
Twitter and the WNBA announced a multi-year streaming agreement Monday which will see the social platform live stream 20 regular season games per season over the next three years. As part of the partnership, the WNBA will join Twitter’s Amplify program, which include 40 weekly highlights packages distributed on Twitter.
“We are thrilled to bring live WNBA games to Twitter, which will allow us to further showcase our league to a global audience,” WNBA President Lisa Borders said in a statement. “This partnership displays Twitter’s extraordinary commitment to women’s sports and the rising popularity of our athletes and our game.”

Added witter COO Anthony Noto said in a statement: “We are excited to help extend the reach of women’s sports around the world by collaborating further with the NBA to be the home of weekly live WNBA games for the next three seasons. The growing women’s basketball fanbase will be able to turn to Twitter to watch free games side by side with the real-time conversation.”
Live streaming sports has remained a priority for Twitter in recent months. Of the platform’s 800-plus hours of live content in Q1, 51 percent was sports related. Currently, Major League Lacrosse and the National Lacrosse League are broadcast live on the social platform in addition to the PGA TOUR, which will air more than 70 hours of content during the 2016-17 season.
