12 famous footballers' sons who could be destined for big things
1. Justin Kluivert
Ajax's latest teen on the scene is the 17-year-old Kluivert, who started Saturday's 3-0 win over ADO Den Haag having featured off the bench in his team's previous two games. The right-winger has represented the Netherlands from U15 level up to the U18s so far, and looks well placed to establish himself at Ajax in the short-term future.
Still, he'll have a job emulating his father, who scored a Champions League final-winning goal against Milan in 1995 aged only 18. Daaaaaad.
2. Giovanni Simeone
While Diego's had his fair share of glory in charge ofAtletico Madrid, son Giovanni is currently starring in Serie A having joined Genoa from River Plate in August. Gio, top scorer at the 2015 South American Youth Football Championship, has plundered 10 goals in his 20 league appearances for theGrifone– including a brace in their 3-1 win over Juventus in November. Like father like son indeed.
3. Leroy Sané
Unlike many of the names on this list, Sanédoesn't need much of an introduction. The Manchester City forward shot to prominence as one of the Bundesliga's standout young players, before securing a £37m move to Pep Guardiola's team last summer. Father Souleyman also spent time in Germany during his career, with Freiburg, Nurnberg and Wattenscheid benefitting from the Senegalese’s services in the 1980s and 1990s.
4. Rivaldinho
It doesn’t take a genius to work out the identity of Rivaldinho’s dad. The 21-year-old will probably never be able to match the accomplishments of ex-Barcelonaand Brazil attacking midfielder Rivaldo –who includes the Champions League, Copa America and World Cup among his trophies –but nevertheless looks to have carved out a career for himself. Father and son even scored in the same match in 2015, with both forwards netting in Mogi Mirim’s 3-1 defeat of Macae in July 2015.
A 2015 spell at Portuguese outfit Boavista didn’t go at all to plan, but he landed himself a move to Internacional in May 2016 and will hope to establish himself in the new season.
5. Enzo Fernandez
Zinedine isn’t the only member of the Zidane clan employed byReal Madrid: son Enzo Fernandez – his mother’s surname – has been at the club for 12 years now and currently turns out for Castilla, losBlancos’ reserve side. Named after former River Plate playmaker and Uruguay international Enzo Francescoli, 21-year-old Fernandez is an attacking midfielder who made his first-team debut – and scored–in November's Copa del Rey trouncing of Cultural Leonesa.
Meanwhile his three other brothers, Luca, Theo and Elyaz, are also in Madrid's youth sides.
6. Jordan Lukaku
Romelu isn't the only Lukaku playing European football, with left-back Jordan currently on the books at Lazio after earning himself a move to Serie A from Oostende in the summer. Father Roger made 20 appearances for the Belgian club in his final playing season of 1998/99 before retiring when Jordan – who’s played five times for Belgium – was approaching his fifth birthday.
7. Christian Maldini
When Paolo Maldini called time on a 24-year professional career with Milan in 2009, the No.3 shirt was retired in his honour. The jersey will never be worn again unless one of Maldini’s two sons makes it at the club, with Christian the eldest and best placed to follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps– Cesare was the first Maldini to make his name with the Rossoneri.
He's still got some way to go, though: Maldini Jr. left Milan for Reggina in the summer and was sent straight out on loan to Maltese side Hamrum Spartans. Because obviously.
8. Luka Zahovic
Born in Portugal, playing in the Netherlands and representing Slovenia at under-21 level, Zahovic could enjoy a similarly peripatetic career as dad Zlatko, who worked in Serbia, Portugal, Greece, Spain and Slovenia during his playing days. After a promising couple of years with Maribor, Luka was signed by Heerenveen in summer 2015 for around €700,000, but rejoined his former club on loan for 2016/17.
9. Oan Djorkaeff
Youri Djorkaeff was himself the son of a footballer, with dad Jean representing Lyon, Marseille, PSGand Paris FC between 1958 and 1974, as well as winning 48 France caps. Youri’s career was even more impressive – 82 international appearances and spells at Inter, PSG and Monaco – and Oan has now extended the dynasty further. Montpellier’s 19-year-old midfielder is also tipped to represent his country in the future.

10. Niall Keown
Like father Martin, Niall Keown is a centre-back currently plying his trade at Partick Thistle, on loan from Reading. The 21-year-old made two substitute appearances for the first team last term but was limited to the Royals’ development squad thereafter, and also made his Republic of Ireland debut at U21 level last year. Having signed a three-year deal at Reading in summer 2015, Keown appears to be part of the Championship club’s plans going forward.
11. Ianis Hagi
The 19-year-old Ianis was bought by Fiorentina last summer after skippering his dad's team Viitorul Constanța in the Romanian top flight, aged only 17. Naturally, those in his homeland are hoping he can go on to replicate Gheorghe's achievements of playing for his country. He’s already notched three goals in three games for Romania’s U19s, although he’ll have done extremely well if he manages to match his father’s achievements.
12. Tom Rosenthal
Former Liverpool, Tottenham and Watford striker Ronnie Rosenthal turned out for Israel 60 times, but son Tom seems keen to represent Belgium – the country of his mother’s birth – on the international scene. The teenager, who joined QPR from Zulte Waregem last year but was released after only a season, has 11 caps for the Red Devils’ U19 side. Aged 20, he's on the lookout for a new club.
