Seventh seed Marin Cilic surged into the Roland Garros fourth round on Saturday, dismissing Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 47 minutes.
Cilic recorded his 100th tour-level clay-court win as he broke Lopez seven times, benefitting from 29 unforced errors off the Spaniard's racquet, while striking 31 winners of his own.
"I played extremely well today," said Cilic. "And I would say the conditions were a little bit slower today than these other days. When we started the court was quite heavy, and I felt that suited me much more than Feliciano.
"I was returning extremely well today. So that helped me to neutralise his big serve. And then off the ground I was playing really, really good. That's a good win for me today."
The 28-year-old Cilic, winner of the 2014 US Open, is through to the fourth round in Paris for the fourth time and will look to reach his first quarter-final when he faces Kevin Anderson next.
Watch: Cilic Confident At Roland Garros
Cilic came into Roland Garros in good clay-court form, having won his 17th tour-level title in Istanbul (d. Raonic) and reached the quarter-finals at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in Monte-Carlo (l. to Ramos-Vinolas) and Rome (l. Isner).
Anderson prevailed in just under four hours against Kyle Edmund, edging the Brit 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
"Just lost a tight one. There was so much to take from it positively and stuff I've been working on and showing good maturity in my game," said Edmund.
"I think the match, just very small margins, not much in it. That's the difference at this level is that you learn as you go up. That's the reality is you're not going to get masses of opportunities. They're all very small opportunities, small margins, and a few points here and there. I think that was the reality of it today was there was a few points here and there."
The South African, who is through to the fourth round for the third time, has continued to improve on his comeback from a hip injury at the start of the season. He came into Roland Garros after reaching the semi-finals on clay in Estoril (l. to Muller) and the quarter-finals last week in Geneva (l. to Nishikori).
He will need to overturn a 1-5 FedEx ATP Head2Head mark against Cilic, though, if he is to equal his best Grand Slam performance and make the quarter-finals in Paris.
Fernando Verdasco continued his good run as he defeated Pablo Cuevas 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the round of 16. The Spaniard had upset ninth seed Alexander Zverev in the first round and followed that up with a five-set win over home hope Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second round.
The left-hander is bidding to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final since 2013 Wimbledon (l. to Murray). He goes on to face either eighth seed Kei Nishikori or #NextGenATP Korean Hyeon Chung.
