Del Potro, Cilic To Wrap Up Roland Garros First-Round Action

First-round play reaches its conclusion on Tuesday at Roland Garros, and while plenty of stars took to the courts during the Grand Slam's first two days, tournament officials have saved some of the best first-round matchups for the last of their opening days.

Third seed Marin Cilic kicks off play on Court Philippe-Chatrier against Aussie James Duckworth. Cilic reached his maiden ATP World Tour clay-court semi-final at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia earlier this month (l. to Zverev), snapping a five-match losing streak in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court quarter-finals.

The Croatian has reached two of the past three Grand Slam title matches (Wimbledon 2017, l. to Federer; Australian Open 2018, l. to Federer). He posted his best Roland Garros result last year by reaching the quarter-finals (l. to Wawrinka). Cilic, however, has lost in the first round in Paris three times (2007, 2011, 2016).

Ten-time champion Rafael Nadal and Italian Simone Bolelli will resume their rain-suspended first-round match after Cilic-Duckworth. Nadal leads 6-4, 6-3, 0-3.

Over on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, #NextGenATP Canadian Denis Shapovalov will try to pick up his first Roland Garros win and stretch the best clay-court run of his young career against Gazprom Hungarian Open finalist John Millman of Australia. Shapovalov, seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam (No. 24), hadn't won an ATP World Tour clay-court match before this season. But, earlier this month, the 19-year-old reached the Mutua Madrid Open semi-finals and the third round in Rome.

BNP Paribas Open champion and fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro closes out the day on Court Suzanne-Lenglen against home favourite Nicolas Mahut of France. Del Potro retired from his third-round match in Rome against David Goffin down 2-6, 5-4 because of a groin injury.

The Argentine's best result in Paris came in 2009 when he reached the semi-finals (l. to eventual champion Federer). Last year, Del Potro made the third round (l. Murray).

Another #NextGenATP player in Aussie Alex de Minaur will try to secure Roland Garros win No. 1 against 16th seed Kyle Edmund. The top Brit reached his first Masters 1000 quarter-final in Madrid.

Speaking of Masters 1000 firsts, sixth seed Kevin Anderson faces 36-year-old Paolo Lorenzi of Italy to start play on Court 7. Anderson broke a 10-match losing streak in Masters 1000 quarter-finals in Madrid.

Elsewhere, Italy's Fabio Fognini, the 18th seed, meets Grand Prix Hassan II titlist Pablo Andujar of Spain; ninth seed John Isner and American wild card Noah Rubin resume their first-round match with Isner leading 6-3, 7-6(7); and 14th seed Jack Sock will go for win No. 6 on the year against Estonia's Jurgen Zopp.

Doubles play also begins on Tuesday, and fans will see something they've never seen before: Mike Bryan playing with someone not named “Bob Bryan” at Roland Garros. For the first time since the 1999 Australian Open – a stretch of 76 consecutive Grand Slams  – the Bryans are not playing together at a Grand Slam event.

Bob Bryan is still recovering from the right hip injury he suffered in the Mutua Madrid Open doubles final on 13 May. Mike is partnering with compatriot Sam Querrey. The two face the Skupski brothers – Ken Skupski and Neal Skupski – of Great Britain.
