Fognini Ignites Miami Campaign


Fabio Fognini moves into the Miami Open presented by Itau second round courtesy of a 6-4, 7-5 victory over American Ryan Harrison on Wednesday.

The World No. 40 won their only previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting at the 2014 BNP Paribas Open and repeated the win in straight sets to book a match-up with 30th seed Joao Sousa.

Argentine Federico Delbonis beat his countryman and 2012 Miami semi-finalist Juan Monaco 7-5, 7-6(4). American Donald Young managed to nullify the serve-and-volley tactics of Dustin Brown in a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory to earn a second-round match against 11th seed Lucas Pouille.

Nicolas Mahut won the Miami doubles title last year (w/Herbert) and put in an impressive display to oust #NextGenATP player Michael Mmoh 6-3, 6-2. Facundo Bagnis made his main draw debut in Miami, but was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by World No. 77 Jeremy Chardy.

Yoshihito Nishioka prevailed in a two-hour battle with Australia’s Jordan Thompson. Nishioka, who reached the fourth round at Indian Wells last week, saved 11/14 break points to clinch the 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. Frenchman Benoit Paire defeated Martin Klizan 7-6(4), 6-3 to earn a second-round encounter with 21st seed Pablo Cuevas.
