Krawietz Goes From Lucky Loser To Winning Run

Sometimes success as a pro tennis player requires a little bit of luck, which Kevin Krawietz can attest to.

After losing in the final round of qualifying at last week’s ATP Challenger Tour event in Eckental, Germany, the 24-year-old German made it into the main draw as a lucky loser. Krawietz took full advantage of the second chance, knocking off two seeded players on his way to a semi-final finish.

At this week’s $75,000 Challenger in Ortisei, Italy, Krawietz is continuing to ride the momentum by defeating second seed Evgeny Donskoy of Russia on his way to another semi-final.

“After I managed to get into the main draw in Eckental, I played a great first-round match. I've kept going from there and now I’m on a little run,” said Krawietz. “I’ve had a little but of luck as well, but I’m in good shape now and feeling good on the court.”

Although his mind is still solely focused on continuing to advance in Ortisei, Krawietz has also given some thought to his off-season. He’ll go on holiday for 10 days before heading to Munich as he looks to continue his current form into next year.

“It’s really just trying to keep going with the quality of tennis I have now, good serving and good returning,” he said. “I want to maintain this level and then also look to try and build on it.”

Currently ranked No. 349 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Krawietz is projected to move back inside the Top 300 on Monday after his run in Ortisei. The German is hopeful that his small stroke of luck can turn into a milestone moment this week by winning his first Challenger title.

“I've been to Ortisei many times now and like this tournament a lot,” said Krawietz. “I love being around the mountains here. The Italian people are really nice as well, good cappuccino, good food. There’s a lot to like!”
