Murray/Soares Win Opener; Top Seeds Upset

Fifth seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares made a winning start to their 2017 Roland Garros campaign, while top seeds Henri Kontinen/John Peers and defending champions Feliciano Lopez/Marc Lopez bowed out as doubles action began Tuesday in Paris.

Murray and Soares defeated the Serbian duo of Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki 6-3, 7-6(0). Kontinen and Peers lost to recent Estoril finalists David Marrero and Tommy Robredo 7-6(3), 6-3, while sixth seeds Lopez and Lopez fell to Julio Peralta and Horacio Zeballos 6-2, 6-3.

Kontinen and Peers had been looking to continue their Parisian winning streak, following their triumph last November at the Tennis Paris Masters (d. Herbert/Mahut). The first-round loss Tuesday marked their earliest exit since the opening week of the season in Brisbane, which preceded their triumph at the Australian Open (d. Bryan/Bryan).

Lopez and Lopez had won the Roland Garros title last June with victory over the Bryan brothers in the final. They were runners-up last month at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (l. to Bopanna/Cuevas) and also reached the semi-finals together in Madrid (l. to Mahut/Roger-Vasselin).

Three other seeded tandems joined Murray and Soares as straight-sets winners Tuesday. Eighth seeds Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram closed out a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over Kenny De Schepper and Vincent Millot, No. 11 seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau dismissed Thomaz Bellucci and Carlos Berlocq 6-2, 6-1, and No. 16 seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah defeated James Cerretani and Daniil Medvedev by the same scoreline.

Four-time doubles champion Daniel Nestor, in his 22nd tournament appearance, teamed up with Frenchman Fabrice Martin. Despite extending the match to a third set, the No. 14 seeds fell to Santiago Gonzalez and Donald Young 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-3.
