Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem are taking their tennis to new heights in Montreal. The No. 1 and No. 3 seeds took to the rooftop of Montreal Tower on Monday to hit on a temporary Coupe Rogers mini-court.
Good thing neither player was scared of heights. They were surrounded by panoramic views from the world’s highest inclined tower at the former Olympic Stadium.
Height aside, the blustery conditions made it an almighty task to keep the ball in play. One thing’s for sure, no one was going to give chase if either misfired a ball wide of the court.
“It was tough,” Nadal laughed. “Already it was tough on courts today, but here it was impossible.
“Very windy, but very, very nice views so it was great to be here in Montreal again. These kind of activities give us the chance to see a little bit more of the city from above.”
Thiem may have felt slightly more at ease hitting a ball at such heights, having grown up in Austria. “It’s really, really nice; high altitude,” he said.
“Also it’s fun to play some minutes up here. Of course, it gave us a really nice 360-degree view of Montreal so it was one of the nicest activities.”
