Mektic/Peya Lift First Masters 1000 Team Title
Nikola Mektic and Alexander Peya won their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title as a team at the Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday, prevailing over second seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 5-3 after Bob Bryan was forced to retire with a hip injury. "Very mixed emotions right now," said Peya. "We are very happy that we won the tournament, but it is not the way you want it to end. I think we played a great match until that moment." The Croatian-Austrian duo began the championship match with an immediate break of the serve in the opening game, and maintained their lead through eight games with comfortable service holds. When serving at 3-5, Bob Bryan landed awkwardly and,...
Double Delight For Verdasco In Madrid
Just hours after securing his 500th career singles match win, Fernando Verdasco was back on court alongside doubles partner David Marrero at the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday. Verdasco and Marrero, who won the Rio Open presented by Claro in February (d. Mektic/Peya), continued their strong form on clay, squeezing past German brothers Alexander Zverev and Mischa Zverev 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 10-8. The Spaniards saved eight of nine break points in a match featuring just two breaks of serve, holding their nerve to reach the second round. Verdasco and Marrero will meet fourth seeds Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut for a spot in the quarter-finals. Alexander Peya, alongside Nikola Mektic, secured his 350th career doubles match win, defeating Kevin Anderson and...
Mektic/Peya Clinch First Team Title
Nikola Mektic and Alexander Peya won their second match of the day to capture the Grand Prix Hassan II title in Marrakech, defeating Frenchmen Benoit Paire and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-5, 3-6, 10/7 on Saturday. Mektic and Peya, who beat Divij Sharan and Jan-Lennard Struff earlier in the day in the semi-finals, won 72 per cent of points behind their first serves in the championship match to win their first title as a team in 86 minutes. It is Mektic’s third tour-level triumph, and the 16th time Peya has lifted a trophy. The Croatian-Austrian duo was appearing in its third final of 2018, after runner-up finishes in Rio de Janeiro and Sofia. "It was our third final together. We didn't want...
