Sealed With A Splash: Mirnyi/Oswald Triumph In Houston

There is no stopping Max Mirnyi, even at the age of 40. 'The Beast' captured his 52nd tour-level doubles title on Saturday evening at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship, teaming with Philipp Oswald. The Belarusian-Austrian duo rallied past Andre Begemann and Antonio Sancic 6-7(2), 6-4, 11/9 under the lights at the River Oaks Country Club. They captured their third team title and second of the year, having emerged with the trophy on the indoor hard courts of New York in February.  "I'm definitely coming to the end of my career and I hope I have another go here next year," said Mirnyi. "It's my first title in Houston after all these years. I want to...

Mirnyi/Oswald Oust Bryan Brothers In Houston

Max Mirnyi had faced Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan plenty before taking the court Friday evening at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston. In fact, the Belarusian had played the brothers 54 times (31-23), and lost nine of their past 10 FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings.  But despite the 39-year-olds carrying a seven-match winning streak into the semi-final, Mirnyi and partner Philipp Oswald were too good on the night, ousting the recent Miami Open presented by Itaú champions 6-4, 2-6, 10/6.   The Belarusian-Austrian duo dropped two of their first three service points in the Match Tie-break, but rallied from 4/3 down to win seven of the match's final nine points, advancing to the final. This...

Mirnyi/Oswald Triumph In New York

Sunday was already special for Max Mirnyi, as the Belarusian was competing in his 100th combined tour-level final. But it got better for the 40-year-old, who partnered Philipp Oswald to defeat Wesley Koolhof and Artem Sitak 6-4, 4-6, 10/6 in one hour, 29 minutes at the inaugural New York Open. "I'm thrilled that we got through," Mirnyi said. "A couple tough matches. I felt like the match yesterday we kind of got lucky towards the end. They were a better team than us. Today was maybe 50-50 and there was definitely some magic for us in New York. I'm thrilled about that." Mirnyi Wins 50th Title In Moscow

Sunday was not Max Mirnyi’s first trip to titletown — not even close. But it will certainly be a moment that the 40 year old won’t soon forget. Mirnyi won his 50th ATP World Tour doubles title, joining Philipp Oswald to defeat singles champion Damir Dzumhur and Antonio Sancic, 6-3, 7-5, in the final of the VTB Kremlin Cup. “You never can say the victory was easy just looking at the score,” Mirnyi said. “There is always a special pressure when you are playing at home. And I think the VTB Kremlin Cup is a home tournament for me as unfortunately we haven't got an ATP tournament in Minsk...many of my relatives and friends came to watch my matches and...

Austrian Duo Marach/Oswald Prevail In Gstaad

Competing together for the first time this year, Austrians Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald claimed the title at the J. Safra Sarasin Swiss Open Gstaad on Sunday. Marach and Oswald defeated Jonathan Eysseric and Franko Skugor 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 after one hour and 27 minutes, saving four of five break points. It was their second title together and first on the ATP World Tour, having lifted the trophy at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Aix-en-Provence, France, last year. "This is probably the most beautiful victory of my career," said Oswald. "So close to home and with my family in the stands it feels very special."
