T-Mobile is teaming with the Drone Racing League in a multi-year deal that makes the Bellevue, Wash.-based wireless carrier the exclusive 5G partner for the organization, the companies announced Monday. T-Mobile is investing in DRL through its T-Mobile Ventures fund and the plan is to help the league develop high-speed 5G drones which would be able to stream 3D racing action in real time and provide immersive experiences to fans of the sport. The Winter Olympics’ first-ever drone light show has earned Intel the title from Guinness World Records for the “most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously.” There might be an asterisk in the record book, however: The show didn’t actually take place at today’s opening ceremony for the PyeongChang Olympics in South Korea. Instead, it was pre-recorded last December for broadcast during the event, just to make sure that bad weather or a technical glitch didn’t spoil the view. The Pro Aerial League is high-speed action featuring teams competing with state-of-the-art equipment and it kicks off with an event this Saturday in Everett, Wash.
