MLS Cup: the moments that decided the Seattle Sounders' victory

Stefan Frei pulled off some crucial saves but the most important part of the champions’ season happened back in the summerRoman Torres gives the Seattle Sounders a historic winThis was a defenders’ MLS Cup final and so it was fitting that a defender should strike the decisive blow. Roman Torres was already something of a cult figure for the Sounders support before he strode up to hit the most important penalty in the franchise’s history. Now the image of his celebrations will be immortalised in Seattle.Of course, the narrative that will be drawn from this match seems a little bizarre considering that an entire season came down to a few inches, with Justin Morrow smashing his penalty off the underside...

Fight over Washington's nickname continues in wake of Standing Rock

As Native American protestors appear to have achieved victory in North Dakota, another group continues to do battle with the capital’s NFL teamAt 10 o’clock Saturday morning, about 1,500 miles east of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota, a group of 15 protesters stepped off a bus in windswept Northern Virginia to deliver a stack of petitions with 1,820 signatures, all recently gathered. This was the second straight year that the group that calls itself Rebrand Washington Football: Fans for a New Name dropped by the headquarters of Washington’s pro football team, advocating a change from the “Redskins” nickname, which is considered offensive by many fans. Howard's history-making men's soccer champions needed to be twice as good

The Patriots star has now won more games than any other quarterback, and he is showing little sign of slowing down as he approaches 40On Sunday afternoon, Tom Brady broke a quarterback record with his 201st victory. He did so with ease, throwing for 269 yards and a touchdown in a 26-10 victory over the Rams. And as he walked off the field to chants of “Brady! Brady!” in Foxboro, it was reasonable to wonder if he can get another 50 wins. Or maybe more?Is that even possible?Marquette King is LIT! pic.twitter.com/RF7QBHudT7 Related: How Oakland Raiders punter Marquette King became the NFL's breakout star pic.twitter.com/9uYmkUjhfHThis game has been so good to me no regrets.. Even in the tough times Fidel Castro’s Cuba placed great value on sport | Richard Williams

Long before the Buena Vista Social Club beguiled audiences around the world, revolutionary Cuba’s sporting heroes enjoyed global renownOn a warm evening in a Barcelona suburb 24 years ago, the air thick and heavy, the light-grey and gold, Cuba and the USA met in a baseball game that was as much a contest of ideologies as an Olympic semi-final. As the two teams lined up to shake hands before the semi-final, each Cuban presented his opponent with a commemorative pennant. The Americans had come empty-handed.The USA team consisted of college boys, some of them on the brink of Major League-careers. The Cubans were veterans of their domestic league, unbeaten in almost 70 internationals. After a scoreless first hour, it was...
