Karlovic's Aces Sink Tsonga

Veteran Croat Ivo Karlovic fired 19 aces to upset eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday in Cincinnati. Karlovic won 82 per cent of points on his first serve and saved both break points he faced. Tsonga could win just 58 per cent of his second-serve points. The 38-year-old has now won three of his four career meetings with the Frenchman. Karlovic Opens Newport Title Defence

Second seed Ivo Karlovic got his title defence off to a strong start on Wednesday at the Dell Technologies Hall of Fame Open as he defeated Denis Kudla 6-4, 6-4 in the second round in Newport. The Croatian was playing his first match in almost two weeks, since a first-round loss to Aljaz Bedene at Wimbledon, and is looking for a return to winning ways at this ATP World Tour 250 grass-court tournament, where he has made the final the past three years. Ivo Karlovic broke a five-match losing streak at the Mutua Madrid Open in spectacular fashion on Tuesday. The Croatian fired down 35 aces and saved four match points to beat Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 7-6(4), 6-7(9), 7-6(7) in just over three hours for a place in the second round. In a first-time meeting, featuring no service breaks, Karlovic failed to convert match point opportunities when he led by a set and 5-4, 40/0, then at 7/6 and 9/8 in the tie-break, and again at 6/5 in the deciding set tie-break.
