Thompson Makes Top 100 Return With Chennai Crown

A LOOK BACK Chennai Open (Chennai, India): After 22 years on the ATP World Tour, the Indian city of Chennai began a new chapter of professional tennis on the ATP Challenger Tour. Top seed Jordan Thompson claimed the title at the inaugural Chennai Open, defeating home hope and second seed Yuki Bhambri in a thrilling championship clash.  The Aussie prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in two hours and 37 minutes. He converted eight of 13 break chances to take his fifth Challenger crown. Thompson returns to the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings at No. 95, while Bhambri continues his quest to return to the Top 100 in his return from injury. Thompson/Kokkinakis Oust Former Wimbledon Champs

Aussies Jordan Thompson and Thanasi Kokkinakis scored a big upset on Wednesday in the opening round of doubles action at Wimbledon, taking out ninth seeds and 2015 champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau 7-6(4), 7-6(4), 7-6(4). There were no breaks of serve in the match, but Kokkinakis/Thompson hung tough to advance in two hours and 44 minutes. Next up for them are qualifiers Ariel Behar and Aliaksandr Bury or Marcus Daniell and Marcelo Demoliner. Fourth seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo needed just 80 minutes to move past Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop 6-4, 6-0, 6-3. Lucky Loser Thompson Shocks Murray In London

Aussie Jordan Thompson shocked World No. 1 Andy Murray on Tuesday, knocking out the five-time champion 7-6(4), 6-2 at the Aegon Championships in London for the biggest win of his career. The 23-year-old lucky loser had never won a tour-level grass-court match before, falling in his previous four matches. He wasn't even in the main draw when Tuesday started, having lost his second qualifying match to Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. But Thompson benefitted from Brit Aljaz Bedene's withdrawal and seized the opportunity on centre court. “I played really well. Served great. Got a lot of free points. Gave myself every opportunity in the rallies and didn't make too many errors. Yeah, it was a good day at the office,” Thompson said....
