Broady Builds On First ATP Match Win In St. Pete

On Tuesday, Liam Broady registered his first win in the main draw of an ATP World Tour tournament by defeating former world No. 10 Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-0, in the opening round of the St. Petersburg Open in Russia. Satisfied? Hardly. On the heels of achieving his inaugural win, the 23-year-old British qualifier followed with a three-set, come-from-behind victory over the tournament’s No. 4 seed Adrian Mannarino one day later. Broady, Dzumhur Into St. Petersburg QFs

Qualifier Liam Broady and Damir Dzumhur both booked their places in the St. Petersburg Open quarter-finals on Wednesday. British qualifier Broady saved a break point at 4-4 in the second set, before winning eight straight games to overcome Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the Antalya Open runner-up, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 to advance to an ATP World Tour quarter-final for the first time. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Dzumhur, last month’s Winston-Salem Open finalist, had his serve broken three times, but managed to get the better of Marcos Baghdatis 6-4, 7-6(4) in one hour and 38 minutes. Broady Bounces Back With Fresh Focus

Expectations are high when a young prospect makes Junior Grand Slam finals. Those expectations are only amplified when said prospect is from a nation with as rich a tennis history as Great Britain. For Liam Broady, a run to the second round at Wimbledon in 2015 catapulted him to a career-best No. 158 in the Emirates ATP Rankings.
