ATP Rankings Movers: Federer Returns To No. 1

No. 1 Roger Federer, +1 Roger Federer has today returned to No. 1 in the ATP Rankings for the 309th week of his career, after Rafael Nadal was beaten in last week’s Mutua Madrid Open quarter-finals. The Swiss begins his fifth stint at the summit of men’s professional tennis at the age of 36 years, nine months. Federer first became No. 1 at the age of 22 on 2 February 2004, spending 237 consecutive weeks there until 17 August 2008. He returned to the top spot for 48 weeks from 6 July 2009 to 6 June 2010, then 17 weeks between 9 July 2012 and 4 November 2012 and most recently from 19 February this year, for six weeks. Federer To Return In Stuttgart

Roger Federer announced on Wednesday that he will return to ATP World Tour action at the Mercedes Cup, held 11-17 June. The 36-year-old will appear in Stuttgart for the third time in his career, after falling in the first round in 2017 (l. to Haas) and reaching the semi-finals in 2016 (l. to Thiem). Federer won two titles on grass in 2017 (Halle, Wimbledon) and will be bidding for an 18th title on the surface in Stuttgart, which will mark the beginning of his grass-court schedule leading towards The Championships at Wimbledon. Roger Federer only just left Zambia after a visiting programmes supported by his self-named foundation this week. But he's already looking forward to returning to the African nation. [ALSO LIKE] Federer visited educational programmes and talked with students and parents who benefit from foundation-funded projects. He also made time for some fun, kicking around the football and dancing with boys and girls. “The welcome here in Zambia has been wonderful. The people have been super, super, friendly. They could have not been nicer to me and to the team of the Roger Federer Foundation,” Federer said. “So when you feel this way, of course, you want to come back as soon as possible.”
