Del Potro Prepares To Start 2017 Season

Juan Martin del Potro is making his way to the U.S. ahead of the start of his 2017 season later this month. The Argentine had been training in Buenos Aires and is headed to Miami to continue practising. He is scheduled to return to tour-level action at the Delray Beach Open, which starts 20 February. Del Potro won the ATP World Tour 250 event in 2011 and reached the semi-finals there last year. The 6'6” right-hander delayed the start to his 2017 season to get a full pre-season. Murray, Del Potro Up For Global Sports Honours

Two of the ATP World Tour's biggest stars have been nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards, following a ballot of the world's media. Scot Andy Murray has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award and is competing against Usain Bolt, already a three-time Laureus winner, 5k and 10k Olympic champion Mo Farah, Cristiano Ronaldo and basketball duo Stephen Curry and LeBron James. Juan Martin del Potro is in contention for the Laureus Comeback of the Year Award and also has stiff competition. Del Potro Withdraws From Auckland, Melbourne

Juan Martin del Potro is withdrawing from the ASB Classic (Auckland, New Zealand) and the Australian Open due to fitness concerns. The 6’6” Tandil native was sidelined first in 2010 (right wrist) and then 2014 (left wrist) and needed entire seasons to recuperate. His most recent comeback came in February at the Delray Beach Open, where he reached the semi-finals, falling to Sam Querrey. He would go on to compete in 11 other tour-level events, including a title run in Stockholm (d. Jack Sock).
