David Goffin is having one of the best runs of his career this week at the Nitto ATP Finals. Four days after beating World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, the seventh seed upset No. 4 Dominic Thiem on Friday 6-4, 6-1 in only 72 minutes. Now the Belgian first-year qualifier will play six-time champion Roger Federer on Saturday for a place in the title match of the Nitto ATP Finals. “I have nothing to lose,” Goffin said. “He's playing so well.” The 26-year-old became the fourth and final player to reach the semi-finals of the season finale. Goffin finished second in Group Pete Sampras, behind group winner Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria. Federer won Group Boris Becker, and American Jack Sock reached...
Alternates Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic made the most of their first team appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals on Friday when they defeated four-time former champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in Group Woodbridge/Woodforde. The Bryans, who finished with a 1-2 record, failed to qualify for the semi-finals after Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares beat Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo 6-2, 6-4 during Friday's evening session. Marach and Pavic, who replaced seventh seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcel Granollers for the final day of round-robin play, defeated the four-time former champions and fifth seeds 6-4, 6-4 in 69 minutes. Marach and Pavic came close to taking a 3-0 lead in the first set, but at 30/40 on Mike Bryan’s serve,...
Everything was pointing against Jack Sock on Thursday night at the Nitto ATP Finals. After winning the first set against World No. 3 Alexander Zverev, the American had disappeared in the second, losing it in only 28 minutes. To start the decider, Sock had fallen behind a break and received a point penalty for smashing a ball off the court. Zverev stepped up to the service line leading 1-0, 15/0, and with all the momentum at his back. The match looked as if it'd be over in minutes. But Sock, just as he had done earlier this month at the Rolex Paris Masters, came back from near-certain defeat and will now play in the semi-finals of the Nitto ATP Finals...
Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus arrived at The O2 with little to no momentum from the end of their regular season, losing five of their final six matches. But that has not mattered this week at the Nitto ATP Finals. Harrison and Venus finished round-robin play with a perfect record on Thursday, defeating third-seeded Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau 6-3, 7-6(5). "It's been a fun week," Harrison said. "We played a great match the first match and we were just hoping that as the week went on we were able to keep playing in good form and we've been really fortunate to keep playing well." The American-Kiwi pairing has won Group Eltingh-Haarhuis, and will play the second qualifier from Group...
Roger Federer won't finish 2017 as the year-end No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. But the second seed has put himself in great position to still finish his fairytale comeback season with a perfect ending. The 36-year-old Swiss won his third consecutive match at the Nitto ATP Finals on Thursday, dismissing fifth seed Marin Cilic 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1 to finish Group Boris Becker play 3-0. It's the 10th time Federer has ended group play unbeaten, and he'll head to Saturday's semi-final full of belief, not that he has been lacking. The six-time Nitto ATP Finals champion has reeled off 13 consecutive wins, including eight indoors, dating back to his Swiss Indoors Basel title run. This weekend, he'll be the...
