Brazilians Triumph On Home Soil

For the first time in six years, an all-Brazilian team has claimed the doubles title at the Brasil Open. Rogerio Dutra Silva and Andre Sa lifted the trophy on home soil in Sao Paulo, defeating Marcus Daniell and Marcelo Demoliner 7-6(5), 5-7, 10-7. "Every title is special, but to do it on home soil is another level," said Sa. "It was a great atmosphere this week. I had my friends and family here, so it was really special. Brasil Open Welcomes Back Ball Dogs

Ball dogs, the hit of the 2016 Brasil Open, returned to the ATP World Tour 250 tournament on Saturday to chase more fuzzy yellow balls. Cindy, Nanda, Pretinha, Mia, Arlete and Ovelha dashed around the red clay in Sao Paulo as Brazilian Marcelo Demoliner and Brazilian coach Joao Zwetsch, who works with Thiago Monteiro and Thomaz Bellucci, played a few points and posed for photos with the shelter dogs. “It was pretty fun, super cool with the dogs, really nice experience,” Demoliner said. The Brasil Open and tournament sponsor PremieR Pet brought back the crowd-pleasing activity for fans and for the pooches. All of last year's ball dogs were adopted, and tournament officials hope this year's dogs will be just...

Cuevas Closes In On Sao Paulo Three-Peat

Pablo Cuevas will go for a record third consecutive Brasil Open title on Sunday. The 31-year-old right-hander dismissed top seed Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain 6-3, 7-6(2) on Saturday in Sao Paulo to give himself a chance for a three-peat. The third-seeded Cuevas won 82 per cent of his first-serve points and feasted on Carreno Busta's second serves, taking 70 per cent of those points. Since the first edition of the Brasil Open, in 2001, no player has won back-to-back-to-back titles at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament. He'll try to...

Cuevas Comes Back To Keep Three-Peat Hopes Alive

Two-time defending champion Pablo Cuevas looked out of it. Argentine Diego Schwartzman led the third seed 7-5, 4-1 during their Brasil Open quarter-final on Friday and was two holds away from handing Cuevas his first loss in Sao Paulo since 2014. But the 31-year-old Cuevas kept his three-peat hopes alive with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory that lasted two hours and 13 minutes, finishing after 1 a.m. in Sao Paulo. In Saturday's semi-final, Cuevas will meet top seed Pablo Carreno Busta, who fought off a late comeback from Italian Fabio Fognini to win 6-0, 7-6(1) and continue his stellar stretch on the Brazilian clay. Carreno Busta broke Fognini three times to take the first set in 20 minutes, but the...
