U.S., Italy Keep Davis Cup Hopes Alive With Doubles Thrillers

AUSTRALIA 2, USA 1 Pat Rafter Arena, Brisbane, AUS (hard - outdoor)  Steve Johnson and Jack Sock combined to keep the United States in the hunt for a Davis Cup semi-final spot with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 triumph over Australian duo Sam Groth and John Peers. The hosts led the contest 2-0 following Friday’s singles at the Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane, but had their advantage halved by Johnson and Sock, who clinched a Bronze Medal together at the Rio 2016 Olympics. “Jordan (Thompson) played great yesterday, he deserved to win, he was the better player,” said Sock. “But today we were able to regroup and get a win.” Jim Courier’s American side must prevail in both singles...

The New-Look Steve Johnson Picks Fish Over Fries

It had been more than a month since Craig Boynton had last seen Steve Johnson, and ordinarily, that wouldn't cause anything to be different in their coach-player relationship. But, then again, Johnson hadn't been living his usual life since the two had last connected, after the Paris Masters in November. Last November and December, Johnson underwent his most intense off-season to date. The American radically changed everything about his diet – what he ate, how much he ate, when he ate – and dropped 15 pounds off his 6'2” frame. Johnson, who had been wanting to drop the extra weight for years, weighed nearly 200 pounds when he and Boynton returned from Paris last November. The next time they saw...

In The Kitchen With Steve Johnson

Professional tennis players are creatures of habit. Often reluctant to accept change in their daily routine and training regimen, even the most minor of tweaks is often a significant step. But for Steve Johnson, the most impactful change was the easiest to make. During the offseason, the American committed himself to a stricter diet, ditching his favourite fatty foods for healthier options. With the competition on the ATP World Tour stronger than ever, Johnson is hoping the extra edge will aide in his ascent up the Emirates ATP Rankings. “It’s taken a few months of planning,” Johnson told ATP World Tour Uncovered. “It’s something that I’ve really wanted to implement over the years, but I just wasn’t able to find...

Johnson Edges Isner, Now Plays Sock In Auckland

American Steve Johnson upset countryman and friend John Isner 6-3, 4-7, 7-6(3) in two hours and 14 minutes on Thursday for a place in the ASB Classic semi-finals. Johnson won 85 per cent of his first-serve points and overcame 19 Isner aces. Isner netted a forehand volley to bring up three match points for Johnson in the third-set tie-break. He'd need only one, though, as he hit a forehand net-cord winner on the next point. Johnson, the seventh seed, will meet fourth-seeded American and last year’s finalist Jack Sock, who converted four of his 25 break point opportunities to beat Jeremy Chardy of France 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 10 minutes. Sock hit 12 aces to Chardy’s 14...
