Federer Could Face Haas In Stuttgart Opener

The grass-court season has arrived on the ATP World Tour and a familiar face is atop the draw at the MercedesCup. Top seed Roger Federer leads the field in Stuttgart, his first tournament since going back-to-back at the Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami two months ago. Federer, who has a first-round bye, opens against either wild card and close friend Tommy Haas or Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert. A potential quarter-final clash against another German veteran, Mischa Zverev, could also await the Swiss. Third seed Tomas Berdych, who faces either Stephane Robert or Bernard Tomic in the second round, is another seeded threat in Federer's half of the draw. If 35-year-old Federer faces 39-year-old Haas, it would be their...

Haas Advances To Start Final Munich Run

Tommy Haas began his Munich swan song with his 21st victory in the Germany city, beating Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday at the BMW Open by FWU. The 39-year-old Haas, who's playing in the Munich tournament for the 12th and final time, didn't face a break point in the final two sets and dropped only one point on serve (20/21) in the decider. “I'm very excited to be back here after many years, on my last run in Munich,” said Haas, who last played in Munich in 2014. “It was a tough start for me. I think Sergiy played extremely well in the beginning, mixing it up and really letting me guess most of the time what's...

Haas Returns To Masters 1000 Winning Ways

Maybe Tommy Haas should reconsider this whole retirement thing. The 39-year-old German, in the midst of his 10th comeback, needed only 69 minutes to knock out Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Haas, the oldest player in the draw, feasted on second serves, winning almost 80 per cent of his second-serve points and nearly 75 per cent of Paire's. The win was Haas' first in Monte-Carlo since 2004, when he beat Xavier Malisse. The right-hander hadn't played at the Masters 1000 tournament since 2008. “I think when you go out there and compete, you hope for the best, that is to try to play well and try to win,” Haas said. “Any time that...

Haas Prevails In Battle Of Youth vs. Experience

Former World No. 2 Tommy Haas turned back the clock on Monday night at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston, defeating a player 20 years younger in #NextGen ATP American Reilly Opelka 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3. The age disparity between 39-year-old Haas and 19-year-old Opelka is the eighth-biggest in an ATP World Tour or Grand Slam match since 1985. The biggest age gap during this period is an 18-year-old Dominic Thiem defeating 44-year-old Thomas Muster in Vienna in 2011. “It’s nice to win these matches, especially against the young guys who are going to be around for a long time. The nerves when you’re trying to win a match are something you can’t practise. You...
