Bryan Brothers Survive Upset-Filled First Round

It’s anyone’s guess who will take the doubles title at Roland Garros after a wild first round filled with upsets. For the first time in the Open Era at this event, the top two seeds have not passed the opening hurdle. The last time this happened at a Grand Slam was at the 2015 US Open. Third seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan avoided an early-round casualty on Wednesday with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Philipp Petzschner and Alexander Peya. The Bryan brothers, finalists in the past two years at Roland Garros, are looking to win their third crown at this event. Murray/Soares Win Opener; Top Seeds Upset

Fifth seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares made a winning start to their 2017 Roland Garros campaign, while top seeds Henri Kontinen/John Peers and defending champions Feliciano Lopez/Marc Lopez bowed out as doubles action began Tuesday in Paris. Murray and Soares defeated the Serbian duo of Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki 6-3, 7-6(0). Kontinen and Peers lost to recent Estoril finalists David Marrero and Tommy Robredo 7-6(3), 6-3, while sixth seeds Lopez and Lopez fell to Julio Peralta and Horacio Zeballos 6-2, 6-3. Top seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers lead a strong doubles field on the clay of Roland Garros. The Australian Open champions tasted victory the last time they were in Paris, lifting the Tennis Paris Masters trophy in November, and will look to continue their winning ways on French soil.
