Pavic To Rise To World No. 1 On Monday Despite Loss

Mate Pavic earned a victory before taking the court on Friday at the Foro Italico. With Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo's loss at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, it is guaranteed that the 24-year-old Croatian will become the 52nd player to reach No. 1 in the history of the ATP Doubles Rankings (since 1976) on 21 May. He will be the youngest doubles No. 1 since Todd Woodbridge in February 1996. However, Pavic and his partner, Oliver Marach, fell later in the day on Court Pietrangeli against Pablo Cuevas and Marcel Granollers. The Uruguayan-Spanish duo overcame a break deficit in both sets to oust the No. 2 seeds 6-3, 7-6(4) in one hour, 28 minutes. Cuevas and Granollers will play Pablo...

Pavic Keeps Dream Of No. 1 Alive In Rome

If Mate Pavic rises to No. 1 in the ATP Doubles Rankings on Monday he will potentially look back on his hard-fought second-round win with Oliver Marach at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia as a critical moment. Pavic and Marach, one of the ATP World Tour’s strongest teams this season, saved three match points in a 30-point Match tie-break to beat Steve Johnson and Dominic Thiem 0-6, 6-3, 16-14 in 79 minutes for a place in the Rome quarter-finals. The duo had won just 14 points in the first set. Johnson and Thiem could not convert three match point chances at 9/8, 11/10 and 13/12 in a tense finale, which saw Pavic and Marach close out their third opportunity to improve...

First Quarter Review: Marach/Pavic, Bryans Pacing The Pack In 2018

The season is only three months old, but there has been plenty of excitement on the doubles court with one team dominating early and a pair of legends showing that they may have another No. 1 push in them. Marach/Pavic Begin Year With Tremendous Winning Streak Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic just missed out on a spot in last year’s Nitto ATP Finals, serving as alternates in the event before stepping in to win their only match against Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, denying the twins a spot in the semi-finals. But Marach/Pavic showed early on this year that they have no intentions of serving as alternates at The O2 again — they want to qualify out right. The Austrian-Croatian...

Marach/Pavic Survive Day Of Doubles Upsets

Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic have been one of the most successful doubles teams in 2018, and are showing once again that their partnership is paying dividends at the Miami Open presented by Itau.  Having started the season on a 17-match win streak, which was ultimately halted in the final in Rotterdam, the Austrian/Croatian duo has yet to let up. In Miami this week, they overcame a tricky opener against Marc Lopez and Feliciano Lopez, and faced another challenge in the second round against another team of matching surnames. Nevertheless, Marach and Pavic were able to navigate their way past singles stars and brothers Alexander Zverev and Mischa Zverev, 7-6(5), 6-4 in one hour, 27 minutes. The win was their...
