Johnathan Davis has been cheering soccer in Seattle for the better part of 25 years. He was cheering again in Los Angeles this week during a huge victory for his hometown Sounders FC. The internet, and the Sounders, took notice. Born and raised in Maple Valley, Wash., as a kid Davis would go with his family to the Sounders’ North American Soccer League matches at Memorial Stadium. He has a love for traveling for big sporting events to support the teams he roots for — the Sounders, Seahawks, Mariners, Villanova University where he got his Masters, and Eastern Washington University… Read More

Too much spring in their step? Nike running shoe under scrutiny after record marathon times

Almost as swiftly as the records are falling, scrutiny is catching up to the elite marathoners and the Nike shoes they’re wearing. Axios Sports pointed at the debate in a post on Friday, around the times clocked by Eliud Kipchoge, who ran the first ever sub-2-hour marathon, and Brigid Kosgei, who set a new women’s record of 2:14:04. Wilson was calling the plays himself without any input from his sideline coaches. “It’s all about game plan and understanding who you want to get the ball… Read More

Who is Maven? Seattle-based media company under microscope after Sports Illustrated layoffs

Facing protests against its plans to cut staff at Sports Illustrated, Seattle-based media startup Maven defended what it called efforts at “revitalizing and strengthening” the publication. The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that 40 employees, or 20 percent of the workforce, were being cut from the iconic sports publication and that its new owner, Maven, would hire 200 contract workers to cover sports. The employees received the news from former owner Meredith, which said Maven had officially taken over Sports Illustrated and made the decision to cut staff. Earlier this year, Maven purchased the rights to publish Sports Illustrated from… Read More
